When browsing the selection of used RAM trucks here at Hall Chrysler Dodge Jeep® RAM Virginia Beach, you might find some older models that say “Dodge RAM” on the back. You might even have fond memories of older Dodge RAM trucks. Let’s take a moment to explore when and why these brands split.

The Origins of the Dodge RAM

The Dodge brand started building trucks nearly a century ago, in 1929. The iconic ram symbol was added to their vehicles in 1933 and has been a symbol of quality and performance ever since, persisting through the passage of time and changing consumer tastes.

The Chrysler Acquisition

When Chrysler acquired Dodge, it recognized the popularity of its trucks. Soon after taking over the Dodge brand, it introduced the Dodge RAM 1500, which quickly developed a reputation among drivers who wanted a dependable and versatile pickup that could handle anything thrown its way.

This wasn’t the only truck to come from the Dodge brand. The Dodge Dakota debuted in the late 1980s, and the Dodge Durango hit the market in 1998 before being retooled as a powerful and reliable SUV.

A Standalone RAM Brand

Eventually, it was decided that Dodge and RAM should be split into two unique brands. In 2009, the Dodge brand focused primarily on muscle cars and SUVs. The RAM brand is now known for trucks like the powerful RAM 3500 and the off-road-ready RAM 1500 TRX. The brand has also introduced versatile and spacious RAM ProMaster® vans.
