From rising fuel prices to new innovations in electric driving, buying a hybrid Jeep® or Chrysler is more tempting than ever. But the options can feel overwhelming, especially if you’re exploring electrically fueled cars for the first time.

Hall Chrysler Dodge Jeep RAM Virginia Beach stocks both hybrid and plug-in hybrid vehicles — let’s explore both!

Hybrid vs Plug-In Hybrid: What’s the Difference?

Hybrid (HEV) and plug-in hybrid (PHEV) vehicles both use electric energy to support a gas-powered engine. Still, the two types of cars are very different, and not just because one can be plugged in and the other cannot. Here are some ways HEVs and PHEVs differ:

  • An HEV relies on its gas engine to keep its batteries charged, while a PHEV can be charged using your home electricity.
  • An HEV uses its gas-powered and electric motors interchangeably, while a PHEV exclusively uses electric energy first, then switches to fossil fuel energy when its electricity is depleted.
  • A PHEV can run on electric energy alone (for a limited number of miles), while an HEV always partially utilizes its gas-powered engine.

Choose a Hybrid If…

…you’re looking for fuel efficiency without changing the way you drive. Because HEVs don’t need to be plugged in, you can hop behind the wheel and take off without worrying whether your car is sufficiently charged.

While HEVs are often more powerful and definitely more environmentally friendly than gas-powered cars, they cost $1,000 to $3,000 more on average than a traditional vehicle. Still, you’ll enjoy higher MPG with a hybrid, so you might save more money in the long run.

Choose a Plug-In Hybrid If…

…you’re ready to commit to the electric driving lifestyle. PHEVs are often regarded as a “bridge” between gas-powered and fully electric cars, so if you see yourself owning an EV in the future but aren’t ready to take the plunge, getting a plug-in hybrid is a great first step. Your PHEV might even be eligible for a federal tax incentive.

PHEVs boast lots of benefits: great fuel economy, fully electric driving, and compatibility with your home’s 120V wall outlets, just to name a few.

But remembering to charge your vehicle for hours on end may be a learning curve, or it could prove downright inconvenient if you do a lot of driving. Plug-in engines also take up a fair bit of room in your vehicle, so you may have to sacrifice some cargo space.
