What Do Spark Plugs Do?
Most vehicles on the road today have an internal combustion engine. Internal combustion engines use the combustion process to ignite the fuel and air mixture in your vehicle, causing expansion and eventually moving the piston, which is essentially how the powertrain system works. Of course, you’re going to need a spark in order to get combustion, and that’s where the spark plugs come into play.
Spark plugs create the electricity that is needed to essentially start your vehicle. Without spark plugs, the internal combustion engine process wouldn’t function, and your car just won’t start.
Signs You Need New Spark Plugs
Because spark plugs are so essential to the function of your vehicle, it’s important to be able to recognize if your spark plugs are going bad or misaligned. Look for signs or indications like difficulty starting your vehicle, engine misfiring, the sound of knocking in the engine, or slow acceleration. A significant drop in fuel economy may also be due to old or broken spark plugs.
Even if there is no sign of damage, spark plugs should be changed around every 100,000 miles or according to your auto manual.
