The 2018 model year is in full swing here at Hall Chrysler Dodge Jeep® RAM Virginia Beach, giving our Norfolk and Chesapeake, VA customers access to some great new cars, trucks, and SUVs. The latest addition to the family is the 2018 Jeep Cherokee, which joins just enough new features to a great blend of familiar features to make it a worthy contender in its segment.
The nine-speed transmission, revised last year for better performance, is back this year. So are the same engine choices as before. You’ll also recognize many of the convenience features and a lot of the technology, though many features make their way to more models than before.
One major change for this year is the deletion of the base Sport trim. The Latitude trim is now the base trim, joined in the lineup by a slightly better-specced Latitude Plus trim. The Trailhawk and Limited trims now get rear parking sensors and blind spot monitoring as part of their standard equipment.
One thing we hoped would change didn’t. Some new Jeep SUVs got an updated version of the UConnect infotainment system. The 2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee did not, so it looks like we’ll be waiting another year for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility.
A few suggestions if you’re thinking of buying or leasing a new Jeep Cherokee.
Opt for the V6: The four-cylinder Tigershark engine is competent, but it can’t put a candle to the 271 horsepower V6 engine that’s standard on select upper trims and optional on others. You’ll find better acceleration — important when you’re pulling away from a stoplight or passing in heavy traffic — but you’ll also more than double your towing capacity, which goes from 2,000 pounds to 4,500 pounds.
Choose the Right Off-Road Trim: If you plan on frequent off-roading, you can’t go wrong with the Trailhawk trim, which is outfitted with upgraded tires and suspension, skid plates, tow hooks, and more.
